Believe it or not, but the Exorcist is not just a movie. It's the story of what happens when you violate one of society's most sacred taboos: You find out that you're pregnant with the devil's spawn. A synopsis like this is hard to forget, and it becomes even more difficult to shake off when viewed through an R-rated lens. But what makes The Exorcist all the more powerful is the fact that the entire storyline is true--true enough to be made into a movie that's often considered one of, if not the scariest of all time. If you've seen this 1973 flick before, you're probably wondering how it can still scare you seeing as how it's old and zoomed-in footage is no longer particularly shocking. Or maybe you're just a veteran horror fan who finds herself immune to scares from anything not involving a found-footage gimmick. If so, then I have good news: The Exorcist isn't just a great horror movie--it's a great movie in general, period. The premise is simple: A young girl named Regan (Linda Blair) becomes possessed by a demon and begins wreaking havoc on her helpless family. It's not hard to see why The Exorcist has and will continue to stand the test of time. Even without the audio/visual scares, there's still so much going on in the story that it doesn't really matter when you know what's coming next. In fact, it may even add more suspense, since there are so many moments when you don't know what the heck is going to happen next. If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about. But you can't fault your lack of suspense on the horror genre alone--a lack of surprise permeates most mainstream movies. Take this year's Insurgent, for example: I knew pretty much everything about the movie before it came out, and yet it still managed to surprise me. Or take Prometheus: While we all knew where it was going, Alien: Covenant pulled a fast one and took the franchise in a completely different direction than we thought it would go--and trust me, I know you're just as confused as I am by now. Take also American Gods, which we'll get to later on. For now, remember that I'm telling you that it's not scary and I am not afraid of the monsters in this movie. Anyway, back to The Exorcist. So many classic moments when the world is truly on the edge of a knife! 'Cause let's face it: The Exorcist has a lot of truly weird moments in there--moments when you wonder if they made these things up or if they decided to add theatrics in order to make the film scarier. Either way, there's a lot going on in this flick that can easily be overlooked if you're not paying attention.
